The Origin and Future of Metaverse: A New Frontier of Extended Reality
What is metaverse and how did it come to be? Metaverse is a term that describes a fully immersive internet, where we can access augmented and virtual reality and interact with all sorts of environments using persistent avatars and innovative digital technology. The term “metaverse” was first used in Neil Stevenson's 1982 novel, Snow Crash, where it was a virtual place where characters could go to escape a dreary totalitarian reality.
However, the concept of metaverse has a longer history that can be traced back to the 19th century, when scientist Sir Charles Wheatstone outlined the concept of "binocular vision", where you combine two images — one for each eye — to make a single 3D image. This concept led to the development of stereoscopes, a technology where you use the illusion of depth to create an image. This is the same concept used today in modern VR headsets.
In the 20th century, we saw the emergence of the first VR machines, such as the Sensorama Machine, created by Morton Heilig in 1956, which simulated the experience of riding a motorcycle in Brooklyn by combining 3D video with audio, scents, and a vibrating chair to immerse the viewer. Heilig also patented the first head-mounted display in 1960, which combined stereoscopic 3D images with stereo sound.
In the 1970s, MIT created the Aspen Movie Map, which enabled users to take a computer-generated tour of the town of Aspen, Colorado. This was the first time we could use VR to transport users to another place. In the 1990s, Sega introduced VR arcade machines like the SEGA VR-1 motion simulator, which users enjoyed in many arcades.
Today, we are witnessing a historic transformation of reality as we know it. Our world today stands at the threshold of a profound technological revolution that is taking the ‘real world’ we inhabit far beyond the limitations of physics and time. Welcome to Extended Reality (XR), a new frontier of converging technologies shaping the metaverse of tomorrow – an immersive, interconnected 3D world in which Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies will redefine how we live, work and socialize.
The promise of XR is fueling predictions for an array of some once-unthinkable possibilities within the fast-emerging metaverse. By 2030, we could be spending more time in the metaverse than in the real world. People will be applying for jobs, earning a living, meeting with friends, shopping, even getting married using the virtual capabilities of the metaverse.
In the coming decade, higher education and job training may increasingly be provided in virtual 3D settings, along with boardroom and workplace meetings. Businesses and governments will rely on the power and reach of the metaverse to share information, provide services and collaborate as never before.
As technology advances and converges immersing us in new virtual worlds, we believe the industry is at an inflection point. We are seeing investment and technological advancement soar as more businesses wake up to the vast realm of emerging opportunities. Facebook, for example, has changed its name to Meta and committed US$10 billion on metaverse technology development. Microsoft meanwhile has announced a record-breaking US$69 billion deal to buy Activision Blizzard, makers of popular multiplayer online games.
Make no mistake – as the metaverse continues to emerge, many businesses will find opportunities for change. AI is going to really feed into VR. That’s why I’m really bullish on frontier tech as a whole because it’s not going to be any one industry as we’ve seen in the past vertically.
The metaverse is not just a sci-fi fantasy anymore. It is becoming a reality that will shape our future in unprecedented ways. Are you ready to join us in this exciting journey?
